Tokenized energy. To finance, certify and share.

With tokenized energy, a renewable plant raises funding from verified investors, a producer manages energy attribute certificates such as guarantees of origin, and a community shares output among members. We build each platform with the rules that apply to its use.

Why now

Why tokenize energy now?

Global investment in the energy transition reached $2.4 trillion in 2024, according to IRENA. Renewable projects need funding, their green attributes are certified and more communities share their output, and since 2023 the EU directive allows guarantees of origin to be split where appropriate. Each of those uses calls for a different token.

Platform

Platform for financing and managing tokenized energy

The white label platform covers issuance, onboarding of every holder and payments. The link to production data, to the guarantee of origin registry or to a community's allocation is custom-built for each project.

  • Project records

Capacity, permits, offtake contracts and output, tied to whoever issues the tokens.

  • Production data

Custom connection to plant monitoring or the grid operator to support payments that depend on output.

  • The right token for each use

Permissioned ERC-3643 for investment. Contracts for certificates or consumption credits are custom-built.

  • Payments to every holder

Coupons, distributions or balances calculated under the agreement, with a statement for each payment.

  • Guarantees of origin

Custom integration with the official registry that issues them, with controls so the same unit is never canceled twice.

  • Holder portal and reporting

Output, payments, documents and activity for every holder, plus an issuer dashboard to export reports.

Institutional custody, integrated

We integrate custody and key management providers through their APIs, including Fireblocks, BitGo, Coinbase Prime, Anchorage Digital, Copper and Ledger Enterprise. Depending on the provider and model, keys are managed with MPC or multisig so that none depends on a single device. If the token is a security, custody on behalf of clients is provided by an authorized entity.

Structure

What types of energy tokens are there?

Three families, depending on why you tokenize. An investment in the project, through shares, bonds or revenue rights, a certificate of renewable origin, such as a guarantee of origin, and a usage credit within a community or a utility's program. None of them makes the holder an owner of the plant without an express legal basis.

One project can combine several formats, for example bonds to fund the plant and guarantees of origin to sell its attributes. Each one needs its own legal review, which we settle with your counsel before development.

Methodology

How we tokenize an energy project, step by step

Funding a plant, managing guarantees of origin or sharing a community's output follows four phases. First you choose what the token represents and how it fits the law and the power sector, then the platform goes live and finally the token reaches investors, customers or members.

  1. We review the project, its permits, its output, its offtake contracts and who it is for, and define the token family, an investment in shares, bonds or revenue, a renewable origin certificate or a usage credit. The output is the issuance or program model.

  2. The law firm classifies the token by family, as a transferable security, a MiCA crypto-asset or a right governed by registry and power sector rules, and sets the offering route. Its conclusions become contract rules, such as the fundraising cap or who may receive each token.

  3. The white label platform provides KYC onboarding, e-signature, SEPA or stablecoin payment, ERC-3643 tokens and payments, under the brand of the issuer or the authorized provider presenting the offer. The link to production data, to the guarantee of origin registry or to a community's allocation is custom-built.

  4. The issuance or program reaches people through the project's surroundings and digital channels, and we measure how many visitors complete a subscription. Afterward, every holder's payments, balances and reports come from the same platform.

Assets

Which energy assets can be tokenized?

Projects that need funding, attributes that get certified and energy that gets shared. In all of them, the quality of production data matters more than the generation technology.

  1. Solar and wind plants

Funding for construction, expansion or refinancing from verified investors.

  2. Storage

Batteries earning capacity, flexibility and grid service revenue.

  3. PPAs

Receivables from a power purchase agreement with an identified counterparty.

  4. Guarantees of origin and other EACs

Renewable attributes managed alongside the official registry that issues them.

  5. Energy communities

Allocation of output or savings among the members of shared self-consumption.

  6. Energy credits

Prepaid balances, discounts or incentives to consume when renewable output is high.

Regulation

Which regulation applies to energy tokenization?

Check the regulation by country

The rules for the right the token represents, plus those of the power sector. An investment token is assessed as a financial product, and a certificate or usage credit under its registry rules, consumer law and, if offered to the public, MiCA.

Before development we settle with your law firm what the token represents, who issues it and who it is offered to, based on the project's output and offtake contracts.

In the European Union, shares or bonds of the company that owns a plant are transferable securities under securities market rules, not MiCA, and can be placed through a crowdfunding platform up to €5 million over twelve months. In Spain, shares in an S.L. (private limited company) are not securities. A revenue right that is not a security, or an energy credit offered to the public, may fall under MiCA.

Energy sales, self-consumption and guarantees of origin follow their own rules. In Spain, these are the Electricity Sector Act 24/2013, Royal Decree 244/2019 on self-consumption and CNMC Circular 1/2018 on guarantees of origin. A token entitling the holder to receive energy also falls under retail supply and consumer protection rules.

FAQ

Tokenized energy FAQ

What we are asked before a project starts.

Talk to our team
  1. Is an energy attribute certificate the same as a carbon credit?

No. An energy attribute certificate records the attributes of a quantity of energy, while a carbon credit represents a verified emissions reduction or removal under its program. They use different units and registries. Tokenizing their management does not make them interchangeable or turn an energy certificate into evidence of carbon offsetting.

  2. Is an energy token equal to one kWh?

It can be, if the token is a credit redeemable for energy, but then it needs reliable metering, time rules and a fit with retail electricity supply. In an investment project the token represents equity, debt or revenue of the plant, and in a certificate, the renewable origin of energy, not energy delivered.

  3. Does the token holder own the plant?

Only with an express legal basis for transferring the installation and the required documents. Usually the token represents shares in the owning company, a loan, an income right or a certificate, while the installation and its permits remain in that company's name.

  4. Can guarantees of origin be tokenized?

Their management can be represented, always connected to the official registry that issues and cancels them, which in Spain is run by the CNMC. Each guarantee covers 1 MWh, is valid for transactions for 12 months and transfers within that registry. The directive allows splitting it, but you need to check whether the national registry already applies this. What matters is that a unit is never canceled twice.

  5. Can an energy community be tokenized?

Yes, as a register of members and their share of output, provided the entity keeps the legal form and local control the rules require. The token reflects each member's share and the allocation of energy or savings, and it does not replace the entity or the allocation coefficients of shared self-consumption.

  6. Which risks does tokenizing a plant not remove?

None of the asset's risks. Investors still bear construction, solar or wind resource, price, counterparty, grid connection and maintenance risk. Tokenization improves administration, transfers and payment traceability, and the documents must explain those risks.
