Tokenized carbon credits. From registry to retirement.

Tokenized carbon credits must remain tied to their registry serials until retirement. We build platforms to represent issued credits or finance projects through bonds linked to their sales. Registry reconciliation helps detect discrepancies and control double counting, within the rules of each crediting program.

Why now

Why tokenize carbon credits now?

Nearly 30% of global emissions already carry a direct carbon price, and carbon credit issuance grew 8% in 2025, according to the World Bank. Since 2022 Verra has banned tokenizing credits that are already retired, so the quality of an issuance depends on its link to the program's registry.

Platform

Platform for tokenized carbon credits and project bonds

A tokenized credit has to stay tied to its registry serial until retirement. The white label platform covers the bond issuance, KYC or KYB onboarding and the coupon console, while the registry connection, ERC-1155 tokens and retirement are custom-built, within what each program allows.

  • Registry connection

Imports serial, project, methodology and vintage, and only issues the token once the unit is locked in a registry account, where the program allows it.

  • ERC-1155 token per series

Each project and vintage gets its own ID, with one token per credit and transfers only between eligible accounts.

  • Retirement with beneficiary

Burns the token once the registry confirms the serial's retirement, with the beneficiary and the claimed use on record.

  • KYB buyer onboarding

Verification of the buying company, its signatories and its jurisdiction before the first purchase or retirement.

  • MRV data and verification

Monitoring reports, verifier and project documents linked to each series and available for buyers to review.

  • Back office and reconciliation

An issuer console to reconcile balances with the registry, pause series, resolve incidents and export reports.

Institutional custody, integrated

We integrate custody and key management providers through their APIs, including Fireblocks, BitGo, Coinbase Prime, Anchorage Digital, Copper and Ledger Enterprise. Depending on the provider and model, keys are managed with MPC or multisig so that none depends on a single device. If the token is a security, custody on behalf of clients is provided by an authorized entity.

Structure

What does a carbon credit token represent?

Rarely the credit itself. The token is a right against the issuer, over a unit locked in the registry, over future credits or over the proceeds of their sale, and that right decides who can retire it, who you can sell it to and which rules apply.

The choice depends as much on your legal counsel as on the crediting program's rules. The token contract never goes beyond what the registry allows.

Methodology

How we tokenize a carbon credit project, step by step

Representing issued credits, selling future credits or funding a project with bonds linked to its sales follows four phases. The rules of the crediting program and its registry apply throughout, because they decide what can be tokenized and how each credit is retired.

  1. We study the project, its crediting program, its verified or expected credits and the target investor or buyer, and define whether the token represents an issued credit, a forward purchase or a bond linked to sales. The output is the issuance model.

  2. The law firm separates voluntary credits from EU ETS allowances, classifies the token, sets the offering route and checks what the program allows, such as consent to tokenize or the ban on tokenizing retired credits. Those conclusions become token rules.

  3. The white label platform covers KYC or KYB onboarding, e-signature, SEPA or stablecoin payment, ERC-3643 bond tokens and the payment console. ERC-1155 tokens per series, the link to the program registry and retirement with a named beneficiary are custom-built.

  4. Bonds reach investors and credits reach corporate buyers through the issuer's network and specialist channels, and we measure every step up to payment. Afterward, each sale or retirement is reconciled with the registry before paying out or burning the token.

Assets

Which carbon credits can be tokenized?

Credits from programs that permit digital representation, with identifiable serials, methodologies and verifiers. Each project requires a review of registry terms and unit treatment before tokens are issued.

  1. Forests and conservation

Reforestation, avoided deforestation and restoration with permanence.

  2. Renewable energy

Solar, wind or hydro projects whose eligibility depends on the methodology and crediting program.

  3. Capture and storage

Direct air capture, geological storage and removals with their own MRV.

  4. Agriculture and soil

Soil carbon, grassland and regenerative practices with verification.

  5. Waste and methane

Biogas capture, landfill projects, composting and waste treatment.

  6. Future credits

Forward purchases tied to the verification of each vintage.

Regulation

Which regulation applies to carbon credit tokenization?

Check the regulation by country

It depends on the market and the right. A voluntary credit follows its program's rules and, if the token is offered to the public, may be a crypto-asset under MiCA. An EU ETS emission allowance is a financial instrument under MiFID II.

The first thing we review is the program registry's terms, because they decide whether the unit can be locked, who retires it and whether a token is allowed. Then we settle the target buyer or investor and the offering route with your law firm.

In the voluntary market, the program and its registry set the rules. Since 2022 Verra has banned tokens created from retired credits, Gold Standard requires its express written consent and ICVCM sets integrity criteria. In the EU, Regulation 2024/3012 creates a voluntary framework to certify permanent removals, carbon farming and carbon storage in products, and since September 27, 2026 national rules transposing Directive 2024/825 ban presenting a product to consumers as carbon neutral on the basis of offsetting.

EU ETS emission allowances are listed as financial instruments in Annex I of MiFID II, so tokenizing them falls under the financial instruments framework, not MiCA. Financing future credits or sharing project revenue, as a bond linked to sales does, also requires securities, derivatives and investor-protection analysis.

FAQ

Carbon credit tokenization FAQ

What we are asked before a project starts.

Talk to our team
  1. Does the token create a new carbon credit?

No. The credit originates in a crediting program, with its methodology and verifier. The token represents a right against the issuer over a unit that is already issued and locked, or a documented future right. Its environmental value depends on the project, not on the network, as our guide to tokenized carbon credits explains.

  2. How is double counting of a tokenized credit prevented?

With one-to-one correspondence between token and serial, the unit locked in the registry while the token circulates, and a retirement in the registry that, once confirmed, burns the token. If the credit is used toward another country's climate target, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement also requires a corresponding adjustment by the host country.

  3. Does tokenizing a carbon credit make it easier to sell?

Not by itself. It makes fractional holdings, transfers and proof of retirement easier, but liquidity depends on buyer demand, project quality and the existence of a market where the credit can be traded under clear rules.

  4. Can EU ETS emission allowances be tokenized?

Technically yes, but they are financial instruments under MiFID II and live in the Union Registry. Any digital representation needs the financial instruments framework, authorized firms and reconciliation with that registry, which is a very different project from voluntary credits. The EU DLT Pilot Regime does not cover them.

  5. Why use ERC-1155 for carbon credit tokenization?

Because one ERC-1155 contract can manage many series at once. Each project and vintage combination gets its own ID, credits within a series are interchangeable and retirement is applied series by series. We build it custom, with permissions for verified accounts, and when the token is a project bond we use ERC-3643.
