Automation

Why does a smart contract need automation?

Because a smart contract never runs on its own. Every state change needs a transaction someone signs and pays for, even after the condition is met. Automation watches that condition, checks it still holds and sends the call, with gas limits, protected keys and a record of every execution.

What's included

What our smart contract automation includes.

Automating means giving a process permission to sign on your behalf. Every piece narrows that permission, monitors it and records what it did.

  • Triggers

Runs on a schedule, on a contract event or when an external data point crosses a threshold.

  • Pre-flight checks

Every call is simulated and its conditions revalidated right before the transaction is signed.

  • Key management

Executor keys in a KMS, with a role that can only automate and has no other permission.

  • Gas control

Fee caps, retries and replacement of stuck transactions so nothing is left half done.

  • Alerts and monitoring

Alerts when a run fails, runs late or the executor's gas balance drops below its minimum.

  • Auditable history

A log of every run with its reason, its transaction and its result, ready for an audit.

Architecture decision

Who triggers your smart contract?

This decision sets who you depend on when it is time to execute. You can delegate to an external automation network, run your own backend with a relayer or design the contract so anyone can trigger it.

CriterionAutomation networkBackend with relayerOpen execution
Who sends the transactionNodes of an external service, such as Chainlink Automation.Your server, with a key dedicated to the executor.Any account, or the next user who interacts.
What you depend onThe external service's uptime and fees.Your infrastructure and the custody of its key.Someone having an incentive to call on time.
Off-chain logicWhatever the service and its integrations support.Anything you need, including your APIs and ERP.None. Everything is checked on-chain.
Typical fitPeriodic tasks and simple conditions in the network.Flows that connect the network to internal systems.Liquidations and expiries with their own incentive.

They are often combined. The executor triggers and the contract revalidates the condition, so an executor failure never breaks a rule.

Methodology

How we automate your smart contracts.

Four phases, each with a concrete deliverable. We define what triggers every run and what happens when it fails before writing any code.

  1. A document with each condition, who watches it, which call it sends and what happens if it fails or runs late.

RFC on GitHub with the sequence diagram of a milestone payment and its release event
  2. Where every piece lives, from the API to your ERP to the custody of the executor's keys.

Excalidraw architecture with smart contracts, an EVM network, the client's ERP and key custody
  3. Contracts with a dedicated role for the executor and the service that watches each condition, in a pull request.

Solidity contract with an owner-restricted function open in VS Code
  4. Edge-case fuzzing with Foundry, Slither, a testnet rehearsal and monitoring from day one.

Foundry fuzz tests and Slither analysis in the terminal before the automation goes live
Use cases

Where we apply blockchain automation.

Automation pays off when a rule repeats, has a date or depends on a data point, and nobody should have to remember to run it.

Security

Security in on-chain automation

Every delivery goes through the same checklist before it reaches mainnet. What changes between projects is the depth of each control, because an MVP does not carry the same risk as a contract that holds third-party funds.

Before mainnet

  • Roles and permissions defined for every critical function
  • Unit and invariant tests, and fuzzing on the logic that moves value
  • Static analysis and peer review of every change
  • Multisig and timelock on administration when the risk justifies it
  • Custody and rotation of the deployment keys agreed
  • External audit when the value at risk requires it
