What a blockchain developer does: roles and responsibilities
Protocol, smart contract and application roles: what each blockchain developer does, how to assess experience and what to compare when hiring.

A blockchain developer builds part of a distributed system: a network client, smart contracts or an application using them. These responsibilities require different skills. A job description or project brief should specify which part the team needs. Part of the value of this work lies in leaving a system another team can understand, operate and correct. Writing the contract is only one part of that responsibility.
Three distinct roles
Protocol and infrastructure development
This role covers clients, peer-to-peer networking, storage, synchronisation and consensus rules. Decisions affect compatibility, availability and block verification. Operating a node is different from changing its protocol implementation.
Ethereum's node and client documentation introduces that infrastructure. Assess experience through contributions, interoperability tests or incident investigations, rather than familiarity with a programming language alone.
Smart contract development
This work turns product rules into functions, permissions and state changes. It involves deciding who can perform each operation, which inputs it requires and which properties must hold. Solidity is an option on EVM networks; other platforms use different languages and execution models.
A contract does not run merely because time passes or an external event occurs: it needs a call or transaction, and external facts require a mechanism for introducing them. The contract anatomy guide distinguishes state, functions and interactions.
Application and integration development
This role connects interfaces, wallets, signatures, RPC nodes, indexers and conventional services. It must handle pending operations, rejections, network changes and provider failures. Users can lose confidence even when contracts work correctly if the interface displays stale balances or prompts them to repeat a payment.
An application may retain a backend for search, notifications or internal processes. What matters is identifying which decisions are verified on-chain and which depend on that backend. The word dApp does not describe the entire architecture.
What a capable technical team delivers
- Versioned code and documented architecture decisions.
- Tests covering permissions, boundary cases and integration failures.
- Reproducible deployment with identified addresses, configuration and owners.
- Monitoring and procedures for maintaining or retiring the system.
Security is shared work. Developers prepare code and tests; independent assessment can challenge additional assumptions. A recognised library or framework does not establish that the complete product is secure.
What to assess when hiring
Ask candidates to explain a real project: what they implemented, a difficult fault they investigated and the alternatives they rejected. A small, contextual code review reveals judgement, communication and testing ability more effectively than a technology list.
For upgradeable contracts, ask who controls upgrades. For an asset integration, ask how records are reconciled and what happens if a transaction never confirms. Not every blockchain program holds money, but every team should identify the consequences of failure.
Comparing salaries and project budgets
There is no single salary for a “blockchain developer”. Separate location, experience, specialisation, employment status, gross salary and variable compensation. An advertised maximum or a freelance engagement is not a salary median.
Our salary guide explains how to compare references. A project budget also depends on scope, integrations and maintenance. At Metlabs, the blockchain development team is organised around those responsibilities, from contracts to their operation in production.
Key takeaways
- Distinguish protocol, contract and application development.
- Assess experience through concrete decisions, code and tests.
- A recognised library cannot guarantee security of the whole system.
- Compare salaries by location, specialism and employment arrangement.
