How Blockchain is Transforming the Financial Industry in 2026
Blockchain in finance: payments, tokenization, delivery versus payment and regulation, with documented cases and integration criteria.

Banks, asset managers and financial markets rely on coordination between institutions. Each payment or trade needs to be recorded, with information kept up to date across their systems. Blockchain allows some of that coordination to use a shared record, with common rules for executing and verifying transactions.
Its applications include payments, asset issuance and settlement processes. Understanding what can improve in each case requires following a transaction from the initial agreement through delivery of the asset and payment. That sequence helps distinguish the work performed by the technology from the functions that remain with participating institutions.
From trading to settlement
Trading agrees transaction terms. Clearing determines obligations and may involve netting or a central counterparty. Settlement fulfils obligations through delivery and payment. Quickly recording an order does not necessarily solve the subsequent steps.
A shared record may reduce discrepancies when institutions accept the same state and integrate it with their systems. If they retain unreconciled parallel processes, it becomes another copy to administer. Savings must be measured rather than inferred from DLT usage.
The BIS examines these possibilities alongside credit, liquidity, custody and operational risks. Tokenization can change execution without eliminating the underlying functions or responsibilities.
Stablecoin payments: examine the complete route
A stablecoin can transfer value on a network operating outside banking hours. Assessing a business payment requires following acquisition, submission, confirmation, receipt and final conversion. Issuer terms, fees and provider controls also matter.
If the recipient needs euros in a bank account, the process ends when those funds are available, not when a transaction notification arrives. Costs include conversion spreads and withdrawal as well as gas. Network availability does not guarantee that of an entry or exit provider.
There is evidence of specific institutional experimentation. In September 2023, Visa announced expanded USDC settlement capabilities through pilots with Worldpay and Nuvei and the use of Solana. This is a dated milestone for a particular workflow, not evidence that all card payments settle that way.
Tokenizing a financial instrument
A token may represent debt, fund units or another instrument, depending on its legal structure. Issuance must connect those rights with a register, holders and circulation rules. Dividing digital units creates neither liquidity nor unrestricted access.
Work continues after issuance: interest, distributions, transfers, redemption, freezes, lost keys and corrections. Documentation should identify who administers each event and how it reconciles with accounting and external registers.
An investment product does not become bank money because its tokens transfer quickly. Value, redemption and collateral eligibility depend on its own terms. Treasury assessment should distinguish token availability, product liquidity and effective access to cash.
Delivery versus payment and atomic settlement
Delivery versus payment links asset and money transfers so that one side does not deliver without receiving the corresponding consideration. It has multiple implementations and predates blockchain. A contract can coordinate both transfers when it controls the necessary states and conditions are satisfied.
Consider a hypothetical tokenized bond purchase for 10,000 payment-token units. The contract checks permissions and balances, then executes both transfers atomically. If a check fails, neither completes. This describes intended technical behaviour, not the solvency of either the bond issuer or the payment asset issuer.
If money is held at a bank and the bond on another infrastructure, atomicity requires additional coordination. An API reporting a payment does not make independent systems atomic. Specify confirmations, deadlines, compensating actions and divergent-state handling.
Immediate settlement may also require cash and assets to be available earlier. Reducing exposure between delivery and payment does not necessarily reduce all liquidity requirements. Compare prefunding, netting and collateral availability too.
Authorised infrastructure and experiments
On November 26, 2025, Spain’s CNMV announced authorisation of Securitize as a DLT trading and settlement system under the European pilot regime. This applies to a specific entity and infrastructure. It does not authorise every token contract or marketplace.
Swift’s August 2023 interoperability experiments are a different example. They used Chainlink and simulated tokenized assets to study transfers between networks. An experiment provides evidence within its scenario; publication does not establish general adoption or remove operational and legal requirements.
Distinguishing announcements, authorisations, pilots and operational services helps interpret sector news. A real integration needs scope, access conditions, documentation and evidence for the intended workflow.
Which regulatory framework applies
MiCA covers particular crypto-asset categories and services but excludes crypto-assets qualifying as financial instruments. A tokenized security requires assessment under securities rules; blockchain does not itself change classification.
Spain’s Law 6/2023 establishes specific requirements for transferable securities represented through DLT. Our ERIR guide explains the register operator’s role and why it is not authorisation to provide every financial service. Custody, trading and distribution require assessment of their own activities and permissions.
Evaluate a financial project
Define assets, money and participant obligations first. Identify authoritative states, rule-changing permissions, events that can stop operations and recovery procedures. Privacy controls and administrative keys belong in the architecture.
Test a complete transaction and failures: insufficient funds, unauthorised recipients, unavailable providers, corrected data and user exit. Compare settlement time, reconciliation incidents, required liquidity and total cost against the existing process. Demonstrate an operational improvement while making new dependencies visible.
