Token gating. Access the wallet can prove.
We build token gating and token-gated commerce. Content, perks or products open to whoever holds a specific token in their wallet, verified by their signature, with no password.

They trust Metlabs with their blockchain projects
What is token gating and how is it verified?
Token gating grants access to content, a perk or a feature only to someone who proves they hold a specific token. The user connects a wallet and signs a message, then your app or a smart contract reads the balance on-chain. The token works as an access credential anyone can verify and the user keeps outside your platform.
40-70M
active on-chain users
20%
more mobile wallet users year over year
$83M+
stolen by wallet drainers on EVM chains
What our token gating development includes.
Access has to be easy for whoever holds the token and hard to fake for whoever does not. Each piece solves part of that balance.
Wallet connection
Browser wallets, mobile wallets and smart accounts, with a clear flow for first-time users.
Sign-in signature
Sign-In with Ethereum with a nonce and an expiry, so no signature can be replayed.
Access rules
Which token, what minimum balance and on which network, combined into tiers or collections.
On-chain checks
Contracts that read the balance before allowing a mint, a vote or a claim, with no server involved.
Membership pass
ERC-721, ERC-1155 or soulbound contracts for the pass, with issuance, expiry and revocation.
Store integration
Discounts, presales and exclusive products in your store or site based on the customer's token.
Check access in the contract or on your server?
It depends on what the access protects. If what unlocks happens on-chain, the check belongs in the contract. If it is content, a store or a community, your server runs it after verifying the wallet signature.
| Criterion | In the contract | On the server with a signature |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is checked | The contract reads the balance on every gated call. | Server checks the SIWE signature and the balance via RPC. |
| Cost to the user | Gas on every gated action. | None, signing a message costs no gas. |
| Main risk | An access rule that cannot change without migrating. | A balance that changes after the session opens. |
| Typical fit | Mints, votes and on-chain claims. | Content, stores, communities and events. |
On the server, sessions expire and the balance is checked again before every sensitive action.
How we build your token gating.
Four phases, each with a deliverable. First we define what each token unlocks and where it is checked. Then we build a flow users do not need to understand to use.
An RFC with the access tiers, the tokens that unlock them and what is checked on-chain or on the server.

We design in Figma the wallet connection, the signature and what someone without the token sees.

Pass contracts and the signature and balance verification logic, reviewed in pull requests.

Tests for granted and denied access, Slither analysis and deployment with verified source code.

Tools for access you can verify.
Solidity contracts on OpenZeppelin, wagmi and viem to connect wallets, and Node.js and Next.js to verify signatures server-side.
- Solidity
The smart contract language for verifiable rules on EVM networks.
- OpenZeppelin
Audited Solidity contracts for tokens, access control and upgradeable systems.
- Wagmi
Hooks for EVM wallets and contracts in React, Vue and other frontends.
- Viem
A TypeScript client for EVM networks, modular and strictly typed by design.
- Node.js
A JavaScript runtime for backends, indexers and server-side Web3 services.
- Next.js
A React framework with indexable content for Web3 sites and applications.
Where we apply token gating.
It works when access is a perk users want to keep, transfer or prove outside your platform.

Customer presales
Collections and drops that open early to whoever holds the brand's pass in their wallet.
Blockchain for Fashion & Luxury
Fan content
Unreleased tracks, early tickets and meetups reserved for holders of the artist's token.
Blockchain for Music & Media
Members and season holders
Club perks for members with a verifiable pass, with no plastic cards or manual lists.
Blockchain for Pro Sports
In-game content
Levels, items or servers reserved for whoever holds a specific asset from the game's collection.
Blockchain for Gaming & Entertainment

Security in token gating
Every delivery goes through the same checklist before it reaches mainnet. What changes between projects is the depth of each control, because an MVP does not carry the same risk as a contract that holds third-party funds.
Before mainnet
- Roles and permissions defined for every critical function
- Unit and invariant tests, and fuzzing on the logic that moves value
- Static analysis and peer review of every change
- Multisig and timelock on administration when the risk justifies it
- Custody and rotation of the deployment keys agreed
- External audit when the value at risk requires it
