In the rented-liquidity model, the protocol issues tokens to incentivize third parties to deposit into its pools. When those incentives drop, the mercenary liquidity leaves and the market empties out. POL flips that dynamic: the protocol acquires the liquidity positions for its own balance sheet, usually through bonding, where the user sells their LP or an asset to the treasury in exchange for protocol tokens at a discount with vesting. The treasury keeps that liquidity permanently and captures trading fees.
It is not a technical standard. The origin is verified: OlympusDAO launched in March 2021 and popularized the POL concept through its bonding mechanism around the OHM token. In September 2021 it launched Olympus Pro, a bonding-as-a-service offering that let other protocols acquire their own liquidity, extending the practice beyond a single project.
Sustainability and sovereignty. The protocol stops depending on continuous emissions to sustain the market, controls its own liquidity depth and generates fee income for the DAO treasury. It is a design pillar of sustainable treasuries and connects directly to the strategic choice between owned liquidity and liquidity rented via incentives. Frax Finance is another example of a treasury that holds its own liquidity, managed with its AMOs, as part of its design.
