The core of the standard is the IERC4824 interface with its daoURI() function, which returns a URI pointing to a JSON object that follows the ERC-4824 DAO JSON-LD Schema. That schema organizes a DAO's metadata into five subsidiary URIs: membersURI, proposalsURI, activityLogURI, governanceURI and contractsURI. Using JSON-LD lets the data link semantically, so indexers, explorers and other DAOs read the same structure without bespoke integrations.
Before ERC-4824, each DAO framework (Aragon, Moloch, DAOstack, Compound Governor) exposed its members, proposals and activity through mutually incompatible schemas. The standard enables interoperability and discovery: an aggregator can enumerate members, proposals and activity history across heterogeneous DAOs with a single read, instead of coding a separate connector for every organization.
ERC-4824 was created on 17 February 2022 and, at the time of writing, remains in Review status within Ethereum's Standards Track, not yet Final. Its authors are Joshua Tan, Isaac Patka, Ido Gershtein, Eyal Eithcowich, Michael Zargham and Sam Furter. The DAOstar initiative drives it with participation from Aragon, Gnosis Safe, Tally and DAOhaus, among others, as the sector's backing for a common interface to on-chain governance.
