The mechanism works by staking the organization's tokens on a proposal. Conviction accumulates gradually while those tokens remain staked, does not fully activate until some time passes, and decays if they are withdrawn or the vote changes. When a proposal's accumulated conviction crosses a dynamic threshold, set by the ratio between requested funds and the size of the common pool, the proposal passes automatically and funds are disbursed. It is continuous signaling, not a one-off vote.
Conviction voting rewards long-term commitment over last-minute coordination and makes manipulation right before a vote closes expensive. It removes the dependence on a quorum and on fixed voting windows, and lets several proposals compete in parallel continuously, which fits organizations that allocate funds from a common pool on a recurring basis.
