Polygon

Polygon PoS is an EVM network with its own validators and POL fees. It is distinct from Agglayer, Polygon CDK and Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta, whose sequencer closed in July 2026. An integration identifies the target network and checks asset contracts, validation assumptions and bridge routes rather than treating every Polygon product as interchangeable.

Key takeaways

  • Polygon PoS uses its own validators and POL for gas.
  • PoS, CDK, Agglayer and Polygon zkEVM are distinct components.
  • EVM compatibility does not remove asset, bridge and contract checks.

What is Polygon?

Polygon includes different infrastructures that need to be distinguished when designing a product. Polygon PoS is an EVM network with its own validators and POL for gas. Agglayer addresses interoperability and Polygon CDK provides chain-building tools; these are not alternative names for one chain.

This profile focuses on Polygon PoS. Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta is a separate product whose sequencer closed on 3 July 2026 according to the official notice. It should not be presented as an active destination for new deployments or confused with PoS.

How it works

Polygon PoS combines block production and validation components and connects to Ethereum through contracts and checkpoints. That relationship does not make it a rollup with identical security assumptions. Operations execute under PoS rules and its validation infrastructure, which need their own assessment.

EVM compatibility supports reuse of Solidity code and client tooling. Deployment still requires checking virtual machine versions, contract addresses, oracles and assets. Movements between Ethereum and Polygon require a bridge mechanism with its own process and exit conditions, separate from ordinary transfers within the network.

What Polygon offers

PoS can fit applications with frequent operations when their assets and users can access the network. A membership programme can issue transferable or restricted credentials and check their validity through an application. Contract permissions and commercial rules need to be defined explicitly.

Prototypes should measure issuance, use and revocation, including transaction costs and interface recovery. For assets arriving from another network, record their origin, contract and representation. This avoids assuming that two balances sharing a symbol can be treated as a single position with identical conditions.

Limitations and selection criteria

Choosing Polygon PoS depends on available integrations, acceptable validation assumptions and application maintenance costs. Test RPC interruptions, indexing delays and event reconstruction. Upgrade schedules and permissions in external contracts also belong in the assessment, alongside the application's own code.

Agglayer does not independently guarantee shared liquidity or eliminate all bridge dependencies. A specific CDK-built chain needs documentation of its own configuration. Compare actual deployments rather than ecosystem brands, and include the asset journey, monitoring needs and responsibility for resolving incidents.
