On-chain reputation is built on three primitives. Attestations, where a third party signs a statement about an address, with the Ethereum Attestation Service (EAS) as the reference infrastructure, since it lets anyone register a schema and issue attestations on-chain or off-chain. Soulbound Tokens (SBT), non-transferable tokens that represent credentials or affiliations tied to an address. And scoring engines, which aggregate signals into a behavior score.
It turns history into usable assurance. In DeFi credit, a strong repayment record lowers the required collateral and opens the door to undercollateralized lending. In governance, it allows weighting votes by merit rather than capital alone. And increasingly it serves to assess AI agents that operate wallets autonomously. The SBT concept was formalized in the paper Decentralized Society by Buterin, Weyl and Ohlhaver in May 2022.
Among real examples, EAS runs on Ethereum and Base and Coinbase uses it for verification attestations. Human Passport, formerly Gitcoin Passport, aggregates stamps from several providers into a sybil-resistance score. Spectral Finance and Karma3 Labs with OpenRank act as scoring engines. On-chain reputation feeds on verifiable credentials anchored in DIDs and is one layer of on-chain identity.
