Regulation (EU) 2024/1183 amends eIDAS and establishes the European Digital Identity Wallet framework. A wallet enables users to present identification data and attribute attestations under security, interoperability and user-control conditions. Provision and acceptance follow the timelines and conditions in the regulation and its implementing acts.
The architecture supports credential formats, protocols and selective disclosure. Disclosing only certain attributes does not require every implementation to use zero-knowledge proofs or a blockchain network. Technical specifications determine the concrete mechanisms.
A wallet can facilitate identification or signing in public and private services, but does not replace every due-diligence check an entity must perform. EUDI Wallet, DID-based identity and a crypto-asset wallet are distinct concepts, even where they can be integrated.
