On-chain options move the classic logic of options into smart contracts. Most protocols price them with the Black-Scholes model, direct or modified, applied to an implied volatility; some such as Premia factor in volatility skew, position size and the pool's capital supply. The seller or writer deposits collateral, the buyer pays a premium and settlement is usually in cash against a price oracle. Several architecture models coexist: order books with off-chain execution and on-chain settlement, options automated market makers, and structured products or vaults.
These instruments matter because they let participants manage price risk through hedging, generate yield with strategies such as covered calls or cash-secured puts through vaults, and take leveraged exposure with defined risk. Exercise style varies by protocol: some allow only buying and holding to expiry, in a European style, while others permit buying and selling with American traits. It is a growing segment within decentralized derivatives.
Protocols that have built this market include Lyra, Dopex, Premia, Aevo, Hegic and Panoptic, the last deriving options from Uniswap v3 concentrated liquidity positions. DeFi Option Vaults popularized retail access to options-selling strategies. The sector has seen closures and pivots, so it is worth verifying which protocols remain active before trading. In the European Union, derivatives on crypto-assets are subject to the MiCA perimeter and to financial-instrument rules depending on their nature.
