The term describes a trend that emerged strongly in 2025: using AI agents as the interface and operator of DeFi. Instead of a user manually navigating protocols, an agent interprets an intent in natural language ('maximize the yield on my stablecoins with low risk'), translates it into a sequence of operations and executes the necessary transactions, comparing routes and costs.
The stack combines language models to interpret intents, on-chain agent frameworks and account abstraction (ERC-4337), which lets an agent sign and operate within defined limits without custodying the user's private key. Projects like Virtuals, Olas or Giza explore this space, alongside so-called 'AI vaults' that reallocate capital automatically based on market conditions.
DeFAI is an emerging field with plenty of runway: it automates tasks that today require expert knowledge and brings DeFi closer to non-technical users. As with any young technology, the solid value comes from designing the agent's limits well: scoped permissions, validation of every operation, spending caps and good data sources via oracles. For a business, it is an ideal area to start with controlled pilots, measure results and build an early advantage without exposing production capital.
